We learned about Sage through the Food Revolution Summit. Woody Harrelson is one of the celebrity speakers and we found out that he is co-owner of Sage Vegan Bistro in Culver City. Sage is all vegan and organic, and happens to have the first vegan beer garden in the world. Although they house a great selection of beers, we went there strictly for food. What we discovered is that although the food is delicious and creative, it is a healthier version of drinking food. The food packs a lot of oil and grease to fight off the drinking drunkenness. Seeing that we didn’t drink, our meal turned out to be very heavy for us as we don’t cook with oil and aren’t used to greasy food.
With a vast selection on the menu, we ordered off the dinner menu. To start off, we each had a simple tasty salad and then shared a fresh pretzel. The pretzel was so good, and the dips that came with were spectacular: habanero, maple mustard, and jalapeno. We favored the habanero and maple mustard best. When we were in Berlin, we didn’t get to enjoy the pretzels there because traditional German pretzels are made with milk and butter and none of the vegan joints ever had a vegan version. Thus, we avoided having it in Berlin. Having this pretzel at Sage was absolutely a real treat!
Nick ordered the broccoli and kale pierogi dish. He thought it was delicious but prefer the Asian dumplings better. And although his dish looks small (four dumplings), it was quite heavy and filling. Nick’s only complaint was that it was too oily.
I ordered the Spicy Pineapple Fried Rice dish. I liked that it was loaded with veggies: broccoli, cauliflower, green beans and carrots. The flavor had a little kick, garnished with black and white sesame seeds and seasoned tofu. It was well-executed and tasty. Besides being a little on the oily side, my only other complaint is that I could have enjoyed it without the fried onions on top.
And lastly, I boxed my leftover and made room for dessert. We went for the waffle sundae, which happened to be gluten-free. Sage makes their own raw ice cream, KindKreme, and we topped the sundae with one scoop of chocolate almond butter and one scoop of maple pecan. The fresh fruits were bananas and strawberries, and we devoured the yummy goodness, leaving the restaurant stuffed for the entire night.
