Mayfield’s Peacocks

Nestled in the middle of Austin is a hidden little sanctuary, a park and preserve where beautiful peacocks roam freely. The Mayfield-Gutsch Estate is a historic home near the shores of Lake Austin. Originally built in the 1870s, the cottage belonged to former Texas Secretary of State Allison Mayfield in 1909. Now listed under the National Register of Historic Places, the property is part of the city, a park enjoyed by all.

Learning about the peacocks, we visited the park to observe them and to walk the trails surrounding the cottage. The birds were clearly used to visitors. They strutted, stood, or sat within their little oasis inside the city, showcasing their beautiful colored feathers as if in content.

A little nature walk on the trails of the property.
